If it's got too much crud in it it has to come apart but if you clean it on a fairly regular basis it's pretty easy to maintain. What I've done is soak a paper towel in rubbing alcohol making sure plenty of the liquid enters the ball section. I then run it upside down pushing fairly hard on a dry paper towel. This usually cleans the crud out or at least gets it off the tiny rollers. Taking it apart is not for the faint hearted but it can be done successfully. I'd recommend that most people not even try it. I've done it several times but it is tricky. There are parts that are glued and need to be re-glued carefully. I have also done this using tape to make it easier if the mouse needs to be taken apart in the future. I have been using a mighty mouse for well over a year cleaning it with alcohol and have not had to take it apart yet.

I have gone the route of taking the mouse apart and cleaning with alcohol without taking it apart. Gets rid of all of the crap.

All you had to do was roll it upside down gently on a piece of paper or lint free cloth for a few minutes.
