Blog Software as Web Site Software?

So, as I’m thinking of a new site design and layout, I’m toying with the idea of dropping everything into the blog. I mean WordPress now has pages, it has a template system, comments and is very SEO friendly. It seems like a good idea, however I’m not so sure it’s the best idea. I guess I’m just looking for opinions and ideas. Is there a downside? Or is it a really good idea?

If I were to decided to use the blog as my website I’d have to change the URL as I wouldn’t want /blog/ to show up all the time. However that’d screw with optimization that has been done and the RSS feed that people are subscribed too. Can a 301 redirect work with RSS readers? I guess that’s my biggest sticking point at the moment.

Course I could just set up another WordPress blog in a different directory and run two. One for the site and one for the blog. Hummmmm 💡

Well, I use b2evolution ( http://b2evolution.net ) for my website ( http://www.hli.be ) exactly for that purpose… Each blog can be a complete website with its own layout and stay SEO friendly (without the /blog/ 😉 ).

  2. I too am looking to do the same.. After tinkering with both Mambo and long ago phpNuke, WordPress has blown me away with its simplicity and flare. It appears to be relatively “skinnable” tho I’ve not tried myself, yet. I’m just a bit concerned that the links are all ?page=xx, which, in all good SEO techniques, isn’t the best way to do it. Mambo (confusing as heck) has a solution for this with “SEO friendly links” involving .htaccess and rewrite..

Anyhow, I just wanted to post that you don’t need to have “/blog/” showing everywhere. My sample installation went very easily at http://wp.fingertrips.com/ and there’s no trace of “blog” links.. I followed all default installation instructions (ftp put, unzip, modify config.php and run install.php!).

I’m curious to hear how your search ends up.. lots of luck.

Well, I fully agree with your comment. 🙂
BTW: I visited your blog earlier today and I just wanted to congratulate you on a well presented, and informative resource.
