Well the Chicks won... what, four Grammies (not sure), including Best Song and Best Album. Seriously, the bridge is amazing. This is THE only country songs I like, and i think the Chicks ought to bridge over to alternative... if they're not welcome in country anymore. I'd buy their records.

And for all you who say that free speech doesn't mean you should say that, go jump in a lake. Poeple DIED so they could say what they did. You have the right to say anything you want - they should do the same. Don't take back the free speech when someone says something you don't like. Its two-faced, stupid, and hypocritical. And for those who say this song is whiny, the point is that you have had the chance to complain about their comments, and so now they get a rebuttal. And since Bush's approval ratings are so low now, I think America agrees with the Chicks.

That's my two cents.

I just read through a lot of these comments and what people seem confused about is WHY this has been made into such a big deal. Music is art and a form of expression, and yes, we do have the freedom of speech and people should be able to express their opinions, blah, blah, blah. And yes, artists of every form have been expressing their (often controversial) opinions for decades... No one is saying that you shouldn't be able to say what you think even if it does mean insulting the President. The thing here is that Dixie Chicks are (were?) a country group and every idiot knows that a lot (perhaps a majority?) of country fans are more conservative than not. When Natalie insulted the President, she insulted her fans who favor the president, and when she insulted the war, she insults the troops that are sacrificing their lives for a cause she doesn't believe in, and again, military are often conservative-thinking people. I'm not saying this applies to all country fans and all military personnel, but it does to MANY of them. It is their choice to not apologize, to not "back down," but they should realize the change in the demographics of their listeners. First you had people who followed them because they loved their music, the harmony of their voices and the bluegrass tones of their music that made them famous. A lot of those people will likely never buy another CD from them because of what they said. It might not seem like a big deal to a lot of people, especially granted Bush's current approval ratings, but you have to keep in mind the demographics of country fans in general. Now you have people picking up the Chicks' CDs because they like how they think politically. I guess whatever sells a record is the way they see it, but if I were a musician I would prefer people like me for my music and not what I think about the President.

Everybody has a right to free speech, but the comment was certainly uncalled for. Somebody with as much exposure as Ms. Maines would be wise not to spout her views in public places and not expect fallout. She certainly didn't help herself by dissing her fans, either. also, she did "make nice" several days after the comment, apologizing to the President. She is not a strong liberal, if there ever was one, and the song is not that great anyways. Compare it to Toby Keith's anthem, which, God forbid, made people proud of their country and at least did not divide the people more. The only way to win a war is with the full support of the people. I don't see how lashing out at the President's intelligence( he actually got better grades than Kerry; check it out) or his decisions in this war helps the United States. And anything that is said or done with the intent to harm our nation is treasonous. I know that the comment happened a long time ago, but I think that ts time for all of the powerful people in Hollywood and Congress to attempt to unite the people of our country, instead of constantly degrading our military and our government.

Get a grip people...last time i looked the democratic world was built on a persons right to express their opinion in song and the Dixie Chicks are expressing that right, just as you have here. They have made no more of a statement than Green Day, Midnight Oil, or Bob Dylan and Jimmi Hendrix did in the 60's. Would you condemn them as well for having and opinion or merely recognise their talent and enjoy their music as millions of people choose to do. I truly hope my home (Australia) never becoms as narrow minded as yours. And for my two cents worth George Bush makes a really good rancher but a lousy politician.

I would like to apologise to all of you with conservative views. I had gone on several blogs that discussed the dixie chicks new single, and the anger expressed in my previous post was vented off of the ignorami that had expressed their opinions. This blog was comparatively mild, but it was the first that I could comment on without signing onto something. So I apologise. But I do have to say that any songwriter uses their past experience. That's where the best songs come from. This was a huge part of the Dixie Chicks' lives, so it would be relatively short-sighted not to have seen this coming. I also think that the fanbase they lost in the aftermath of said incident has augmented its own importance in their minds. They can still make money. They're huge in England. They're big in Democrat parts of the States. But I did want to apologise. My anger was conserved anger from the extreme cases that make the headlines. They're the group the world sees. Then they think everybody who doesn't like the dixie chicks because they expressed an opinion is extreme. They're not. You're not. So I apologise. Bush is however the worst president this country has ever seen. Nixon included. He mixes a little bit of Nixon's corruption and foulplay with McCarthy's scare tactics, lies, more lies and beavis and butthead's stupidity. That is just my opinion, but it's based in fact.

To "Big Texas", let me tell you about your so-called 'Southern Values'. You guys used to vote democrat. The 'rich' up in the Northeast used to vote republican. There are real 'southern values'. Now you guys seem to have your heads so far up your own butts to see that the values you vote get you in deeper crap than you already are. Everybody has a duty to act in the political scene. Natalie Maines used her influence to denounce Bush. That was a good thing. The response from other country stars wasn't. They weren't trying to influence people back to Bush, but rather badmouth the dixie chicks because of their expression of anger toward government. I'm glad to retain the right to overthrow government peacefully. Yes, Hollywood and the music industry are liberal, GET USED TO IT. They have more sense than you do. All I can say is that this "Yankee" (I'm of course assuming you're referring to the song that the American Forces sung during the Revolution. Thank you for restoring the name 'patriot' back to its rightful place) fan has been by their side since 2003, and unless they apologise to Bush, plans to support them morally and financially into the future.

I was ready to forget and forgive, even if Gnatalie can't, but then I listened to the pathetic (and I do mean pathetic) whining and it was, well, like ripping a scab off of a wound that had almost healed. I'm not ready to make nice either. The Chicks (I can't bring myself to call them Dixie since they appear to have abandoned southern values) have taken a bad situation and, incredibly, made it worse. We'll see how long the new Yankee liberal fans stick around. Since the song made it all the way up to 38th on Billboard, I'm guessing it won't be long.

No matter what your profession is, you go out and ask a novice a questions about your profession and you get stupid answers. That's exactly what the Chicks keep doing. That's the problem, if they are asked specific questions about the war, they don't answer, because they are ignorant to the specifics.

And I am tired of this free speech excuse. You know the saying "everybody's got one". That doesn't mean they should give it.

If you take out the politics, you can't sing or talk about any wars, the military, 9/11, the flag and all that stuff. You can't censor free speech. It's a fine line and you can't expect people to only say good things. I agree that they shouldn't have said it, but I don't agree in holding it over their heads for the rest of their life.

I agree that they shouldn’t have said it, but I don’t agree in holding it over their heads for the rest of their life.

THANK YOU, Deborah - I agree that the "Stars" should stick to what they are paid for doing. I was a Chicks fan until her comments on foreign soil. It's not like she was asked her opinion, she offered it to a concert crowd.

And I gave her the benefit of the doubt and watched the 60 minutes interview. Well, that was it, she refered to country music fans as "Rednecks". I know many people who listen to country music and none are "rednecks". This is all for publicity, and frankly, I have had enough! The Chicks won't get another cent from my pocket. Hide and watch, this album is going no where, because the heart of America feels the same way I do.

And as for Bush approval ratings, they aren't polling middle america anyway.

I think all "stars" should keep their political views to themselves. I don't buy music, concert or movie tickets to hear them jump on their soap box about world views. I prefer they just stick to their jobs...singing or acting.

What happened to Freedom of Speech and everyone has a right to their own opinion? People were harder on the Dixie Chicks for using their free speech right than they are on child molesters and murders, which just get slapped on the hand and say go do it again.

You can't give your opinion about Bush, but it is ok to threaten to kill someone? It is ok to pull a gun on a news van that has the Dixie Chicks picture on it?

American peeps have their priorities all screwed up. Stupid. Americans are lazy, stupid people. While you sit back being lazy and standing up for the wrong causes, the Mexicans are taking over your country! I will soon be called the United States of Mexico.

Sheesh....it seems if you dislike the Chicks and their political opinion, you are also against freedom of speech. The plain fact is, most country music fans are conservative. I said most. Dixie Chicks will never have the fan base they used to. Of course they can always switch to rock. Very few rock bands with fiddle and banjo, though. Too bad, I am one of their former fans.

I agree, I love how gun-hoe all these pro-war activists are about "the american way" and "freedom of speech" untill it comes back to bite them in the ass. Music is one of the most powerful forms of expression and I think it was mature of them to respond to all the bad publicity through art than to sink to their level. But even if you are close minded, and you hate what they have to say, the thing that I love about the Dixie Chicks is how beautiful their music is, you can pretend she is speaking a totally different language and the sound of her voice and the music just touches you.

Isn't the whole purpose of this war to bring equality and free speech to countries that aren't allowed to voice their opinions? (I have to admit, I'm not too into the news about the war, maybe it's cuz I'm Canadian. I'm not sure what the whole purpose is, but that's the general idea i'm getting.) Isn't free speech what makes America a great place to live? So why harsh on someone who's simply voicing their opinion? Something that you've worked hard to have in previous wars.

Bottom line, she's voicing her opinion, that she has every right to, as does every other American (and Canadian :)

I say good for her for speaking out!

Chelsea - You sure do have a different view of the song. I don't see it as a 'pitty me' song at all. I feel she's just stating her side of the story. I also don't see why it can't be on the radio . So many songs are worse these days and they play them all the time. Talking about doing drugs, sleeping around and even murder (goodbye earl & eminem songs) and no one cares. It is extremely sad that so many people go to so many extremes over a few words. No one has the right to teach their kids to hate someone or threaten murder on another person. I don't think Nat should have said it, but I also don' t think it was pre-planned. Things happen, move on.
