When that was off, my battery lasted much longer. Screen brightness didn't seem to make much difference which I thought it would. But I empathize with your dilemma. My laptop has a AMD Dual Core. It chews up batteries and spits 'em out. I have, at most, an hour and a half of battery life. If I have Firefox and all my messengers open, I have maybe, 45 minutes. The best think I can think of is carry a spare battery or two. I wouldn’t much help, as my laptop is a PC clone.
