What I found out was that the biggest thing, for me, was turning off Airport. When that was off, my battery lasted much longer. Screen brightness didn't seem to make much difference which I thought it would.

I wouldn't much help, as my laptop is a PC clone.
But I empathize with your dilemma.
My laptop has a AMD Dual Core.
It chews up batteries and spits 'em out.
I have, at most, an hour and a half of battery life.
If I have Firefox and all my messengers open, I have maybe, 45 minutes.
The best think I can think of is carry a spare battery or two.
