If you tried to download the iPhone Facebook sidebar extension or the latest MidnightFox theme beta, you may have noticed the button didn’t properly install the files. Instead it threw some odd error. This is an issue that effects mostly Windows users.

I’ve since been made aware of the issue and included a link to download the theme and extension file directly. Once downloaded, just open your addon’s window in Firefox, drag and drop them in and they should install.

Sorry about the confusion and thanks to those who brought it to my attention.

When I decided to backup my iPod today, I found out my Life2Go application has quit production and was unable to read the music on my iPod. So I went out to MacUpdate to find another. That’s when I came across YamiPod.

YamiPod is a free application for Mac, Windows and Linux that will manage the music on your iPod. I downloaded it, exported all my songs to a DVD and am burning a backup disk as we speak. This is a great example of a free application that just works.

The number of different applications that use Gecko are ever increasing. What’s Gecko? It’s the rendering engine that powers such programs as Firefox, Thunderbird and many more.

I guess it all starts with Netscape back in 1998 and possibly even before that when Netscape decided to make a technology to power their browser. It’s come a long way and here are a few applications taking advantage of this open source technology.

1. Firefox* - The most popular and most wildly used Gecko application. It’s the little web browser that’s trying to change the world. With hundreds of extensions and themes, customizing it to fit your needs is one thing that makes it so popular.

I’ve just finished installing Windows XP Home (Service Pack 2) and it was quite the process. I’m so happy to be a Mac user.

It started off just trying to figure out how to boot off the CD. Mac OS install CDs say right on them, to startup off the CD hold down the C key. However, with Windows, all they said was go to the START menu and go from there. The problem? The PC couldn’t get to the OS, which was why I was re-installing it.

I’ve taken Parallels for a test spin and I’m very impressed. VirtualPC was the best emulator around years ago and it still never worked very good. Now, with Parallels, you can run Windows (3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT, XP, 2003), any Linux distribution, FreeBSD, Solaris, OS/2, eComStation, or MS-DOS while running OS X.

I installed and ran Windows 98 as it’s the only thing I had lying around. The install process was pretty simple and took forever. The long install is thanks to Microsoft though, not an issue with Parallels. Once installed, the speed that Windows 98 ran was extremely impressive! No delays when you try to open a folder. No ‘this blows’ attitude like I had with VirtualPC. It was smooth, fast and ran quite good.

It’s true. Apple is saying it’s OK to boot into XP on Intel based Macs. They are even giving away software to make it easier to do!

Next thing you know, they’ll be building the technology to run windows applications in MacOSX. I’m sure it’s possible now, but will Apple do it?
