Update-Broken Ankle-1 Year later

Filed under: General,Health Related — Christi at 8:12 pm on Thursday, June 14, 2007

So its been about a 1 year (and a month) since I completely broke my ankle (broke every bone and dislocated it) and I’m proud to say my ankle is basically healed. I have scars on both sides of my ankle and it still swells bigger than my non-broken ankle but overall I can do everything again that I could do before I broke it. In fact I have started running at the Gym and it holds up well. Every so often my ankle will tell me if I’ve done too much by causing some pain or if the weather is changing. I still have all of the metal in my ankle as I figure that I’m going to at least enjoy the summer before deciding if I want to get the metal removed or not. Any of you out there who have broken an ankle before do you still have the metal or not? Is it as simple a procedure as the doctor says to remove it? Do I have to go back on crutches at all?

Hey Abby, I didn’t get back on the computer last night to congratulate you!!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!!

Hope it is going well. I know when they took my splint off last week it felt WEIRD with nothing on, but that thing was HEAVY, probably 3-4 pounds so without it, it was STRANGE.

My daughter was fussing at me for NOT walking without crutches . . . last time I checked she doesn’t quite have her medical degree just yet, she is 16, and thinks she knows everything. Argh.

Please let me know how you progress without the cast. Were you putting much weight on with the cast?

So another 4 weeks off work? Bet you’ll be glad to get back to your work routine and kids in school and pre-school.

  2. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
My casts are off, my ankle is slightly swollen but my nikes fit without a problem! I have been told to use crutches until I feel comfortable putting full weight on it. I can stand without the crutches but and not brave enough to take a step yet! It feels like there is a huge rubber band in my ankle holding everything really tightly together, my ankle flexes up and down a little and side to side a little. My skin looks absolutely disgusting! and I am not even going to tell you about the leg hair! My xrays all looked great and I go back in 4 weeks for a follow up! Then back to work! So all in all everything was a success! I did get a knee brace so I dont have to worry about my knee dislocating again! So now I start gradually putting some weight on a little at a time and see how things go! I need to go shave my legs and get that mojito that is waiting for me! talk to you later
    Abby

  3. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
I am taking my nikes, I am not sure what else to take, I have Nike Air Pegasus tennis shoes, When my splint was removed there was very little swelling, so I am hoping that the shoe will fit, kinda like Cinderella style…lol..I will let you know how that first step feels, I am taking crutches just in case! We are having mojitos on the patio tonight to celebrate the cast removal! I am wearing jeans to the appointment! I know my leg is so hairy and gross! Check later I will tell you how it goes!

  4. Deana says:

Woo Hoo ABBY!!!! I’m doing a Happy Dance for you with my crutches. LOL Good thing no one is here to see. :)

I can’t wait to hear how it is when you step on your bare foot/leg for the very first time in a long time.

I can’t wait to hear IF you are able to wear a shoe or sandal or what. I’m afraid with my Nike Shoxs that I would have to wiggle my ankle too much the first time to wear them (they don’t open up really well as the elastic at the tip top lace only stretches so far.

Bet you can wait to scrub that foot and calf. I have a jar of Amazing Grace by Philosophy Salt Scrub to use for my first shower with no cast.

Oh my uncle in TX had a bicycle wreck earlier this week and broke his femur up near his hip. Ambulance ride and they were suppose to do surgery sometime yesterday afternoon. Haven’t heard from anyone yet how things are.

TAKE CARE and I’ll be thinking about you around 2:10 (well 1:10 my time) this afternoon!!!!! ENJOY!!!!

  5. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
Today is my big day! I get both casts removed at 2:10pm ET, I have been waiting for this day for 4 weeks. My cast is rubbing the heck out of my ankle and I cannot sleep! Tonight I will be able to give my kids a bath and not worry about my arm casts getting ruined! I will let you know how it feels when the cast on my ankle comes off since you will soon be in the same boat! How are you healing, how’s the purple cast doing? I hope you are doing well!
    Abby

  6. Abby Vopal says:

ONE MORE DAY UNTIL MY CASTS COME OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
My casts come off on Friday at 2:10 pm! I cannot wait! we have been busy all day and might head to the inlaws tonight just to get out!

  8. Deana says:

Abby, Oh my, you drove! You are brave. :)

Depending on what else your daughter will need to wear for school, more uniform type items, you might check Toy’s R Us, JC Penney’s, and even Wal-Mart. I’ve seen lots of the traditional skirts, shorts, pants, tops and such in navy, khaki & black at those places.

Our back to school shopping was a piece of cake this year. One of the most expensive items was for my 11th grade daughter, a graphing calculator that was a little over 100.00.

Our kids go to public school here. My husband and I both went to public schools. Both he & his sisters were all valedictorians. My sister and two brothers also were public school. We all turned out to be pretty successful and law abiding citizens.

I don’t even talk about school anymore, especially here where we live. I lump it in with politics and religion. Some of the home schooled folks are pretty vocal as are the private and the public too so I just keep quiet.

I feel like whichever one a parent(s) select, the NUMBER ONE element is parental involvement. :)

Well another boring day. I did manage to help and do 4 loads of laundry yesterday. My husband put a chair in the laundry room for me. With the pedestals on my almost new W & D, they sure help. Glad I paid extra for those. LOL

He worked from home yesterday but today back on my own, me & the two dogs. :)

ELEVEN more days until my next doctor appointment.

What are you at? ONE MORE DAY????

  9. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
you should see the tan lines, I am striped! My leg has at least 3 stripes! I am going to look crazy! I cannot wait to shave my right leg, I know it is so gross under the cast, I have not been able to wash that leg in 6 weeks! how gross! Sophia goes back to school all day everyday on the 26th Fletcher starts school on sept 1st 3 days a week all day, My husband starts teaching full time on Monday! so our summer pretty much ends after this weekend! I took my 5 year old shoe shopping this morning, I can drive the car, even though I am sure I am not supposed to (nurses make the worst patients) We went to 2 stores it took 2 hours and I think she tried on 200 pairs of shoes, finally I told her to pick one or she was not getting any at all, we then searched for knee socks, since she is going to catholic school….knee socks for a 5 year old are near impossible to find! So needless to say, my leg is exhausted, my arms are sore from the crutches, and my nerves are shot….but we have one pair of brown size 10 shoes and one pair ( the only pair in WV) tiny tiny knee socks!

  10. Deana says:

Abby, when those casts come off . . . unless you’ve been using 100 SPF sunscreen, you are going to have some major suntan lines!

Have a great day at the pool. Summer is almost over and kids back to school for you, or at least the 5 yr. old and your husband. Our summer is already over here. :)

  11. Abby Vopal says:

thanks Sunlight! I am definitely going to ask about the massage therapy! Was you foot swollen in the cast before they took it off? mine has not swelled in about 4 weeks, and it was not swollen at all when they took the splint off 2 weeks post op. So maybe (fingers crossed) my tennis shoes will fit???I now have 3 1/2 more days until these irritating casts come off! I cannot wait! what other exercises did they have you doing during your therapy? and how often did you go? I am guessing I will go 2-3 times a week? The area where my incision is, is now rubbing in the cast because my cast is sooooo loose, but I only have a few more days so I am trying to tough it out. I honestly think I could wiggle my foot out of this cast, it is sooo extremely loose, I can stick my whole hand in the top of it! It feels like it is just hanging on my leg! We have another sunshining day here, so we will be packing our pool bags and heading to the pool in a few hours!

  12. I feel that it is so sad that know that Gefen was hounded tormented because of his fame. However, it was the allegations and rumors that tormented him. To me the saddest part is that he shared his beautiful gift with the world; although he had to live his life own in isolation.

  13. Sunlight says:

Abby, Good luck on Friday!!! I brought an extra shoe to the fracture clinic on that wonderful day when my cast came off but….. it didn’t fit so first stop on my way home was a sporting store to buy a new pair of sneakers, a size and half too big for my good foot!! It was a few months before my broken ankle ever hit the ground with full weight, but at least I had a pair of shoes that fit! The next chapter for you will be physio therapy. VERY important for a good recovery. I started the week after my cast came off and went for several months. Looking forward to your posts once you start physio.

    Sunlight

P.S. If available at your physio clinic, consider massage therapy for your ankle – it was wonderful for me.

  14. Abby Vopal says:

I have had the busiest day a person with a broken ankle and wrist can have. Today was my first day alone with my kids, age 3 and 5, it was exhausting! We got up and went to the playground, then came home and got our pool stuff and went swimming, now we are on the king sized bed watching Curious George! In the midst of all the fun I found out I passed my nursing boards….I am officially an RN!!!!! So who says you cannot accomplish anything while broken!!! 4 more days until the casts come off, any words of advice for Friday when I get them off, should I take an extra tennis shoe to come home in, what will it be like??????

  15. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
My cranky three year old son and I are watching cartoons on my bed, and my husband gave me a pillow to elevate my foot and he said,” That is gross, the bottom of your foot has 400 layers of dead skin” ….LIKE I DID NOT KNOW! My foot is so gross, It looks ok on top but the bottom is a mess, I am going to use a pumice stone and some exfoliating soap on it once this cast comes off! The palm of my hand is by far the grossest! the skin is just sloughing off! I hope they give you a moon boot! They gave me one when I had a stress fracture about 10 years ago and it was so much nicer! Someone told me that if you have one and it rubs to wear diabetic socks from Dr. Scholls???? I am so excited for my appointment this Friday, and that night we have a free stay at a lodge in our town, it is called Oglebay Park, the lodge is really nice and my husband and his friend won a weekend package for golf and the room was included! So we get it Friday night! So we can celebrate the casts coming off! I am glad you were able to get to your real bed! I remember the first night I was able to sleep in my bed again and it was really nice! There is nothing like your own bed! Especially after 4 weeks on the couch, I dont know how you did it! Hope you have a good week!

  16. Deana says:

    Abby,

Congratulations on taking your exam. I bet you passed too.

Can’t comment on the incision part.

My toes sticking out of the cast, they are starting to peel. Weird. My leg looked fine when I saw it last Monday but I’m betting it won’t look so pretty two weeks from tomorrow . . . well that is IF I get to see it. I think they are going to take new xrays in the cast and THEN determine what to do next which I hope is a moon boot thing and I can take it off to drive and get out of this house. Husband went back to work W-Th-F and with kids at school, was home alone most of last week. And another week home alone next week. Hey, I made it back to my bed a couple of nights ago. Wished I’d have thought of this sooner, I pulled out the bed steps so the upper step was usable and kneel down on it with my bad leg and then stand up on bottom step with good leg, slowly turn around to back up to the bed and then sorta throw myself up there. LOL Getting out is easy, just slide down onto good foot. My back did hurt the first two nights, I think from laying & sleeping on the sofa for the past 4 weeks didn’t help.

  17. Abby Vopal says:

I took my nursing boards yesterday, so my days of working as a graduate nurse are over! I am 99% sure I passed and will know for sure tomorrow! The funny part is that they scan your palm vein for ID….however only one of mine is visible, so they had to make some exceptions! I took a trip to Sam’s Club this morning and scooted around on the little scooter! It was fun, the crutches were sticking out of the basket, and I was sampling food in every aisle! Nothing like lunch at Sam’s! Has anyone experienced burning where their incisions are, mine has been burning lately, only when the incision area rests against the cast???? it is worse at night when I am sitting still and relaxing! I am also experiencing some pins and needles in my big toe, it has been like this since surgery, I have been wondering if I have some nerve damage, I cannot imagine how I dont have never damage! I can live with the pins and needles! I have 5 more days in casts and then my skin can breath! At this point I think I am more excited to get the arm cast off, it is such a pain in the butt! The leg cast makes me nervous! I had a nightmare the other night, it went like this, the cast came off and bones were sticking out all over the place, and the skin near my big toe was gone! I woke up in a panic, my OR friends who were in the room assured me this was not the case but it was scary! Did anyone have anything exciting happen over the weekend, or any big appointments this week?

  18. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
I had a stress fracture in my foot before but no other broken bones. I am so glad for health insurance otherwise we would be paying for my ankle for a long time! We spent 4 hours in the pool today, I am exhausted. My hubby is getting chinese food for dinner! I am planning to be sound asleep by 8…lol…Swimming with two extremities that are basically useless is exhausting. I am down to less than 7 days until the casts come off, I cannot wait! have a great weekend!

  19. Deana says:

    Hi Abby,

WOW 10K for just the ER visit. Yikes, bet your surgery was another 20K. That was some fall with all those breaks. Have you had any broken bones before? This was my first.

We had a 10K ER visit way back when. Steven, now 13, when he was about 4, old enough to know better, swallowed a QUARTER. He had been watching TV and for some reason put a quarter in his mouth. I had been in the kitchen in the next room to the family room. At first he would NOT tell me what was wrong. He was acting like he needed to throw up and I ask him IF he swallowed gum. Shook his head no. I asked a penny? Shook head no. A nickel? Shook head no. A quarter? Nodded head yes. Uh oh. I knew that wouldn’t end well and off to the ER we went. It was stuck at upper chest height. They had to put him to sleep and get it out with some little grabber thing down his throat. They said he could have half way cough it up and then it go down his windpipe and died!!!!! Ack. Scary. They said you’d be surprised how often kids swallow a quarter, even much older kids. People throw them in the swimming pool and they dive for them and then put in their mouth and auto reflex and swallow without thinking. Ack.

I don’ know about sending the xerosox . . . by time it would arrive, I hope & pray by the 30th of August I’m in one of those removable boot things so that would only have me being able to use it less than a week by time you add in mailing time. It is very sweet of you to offer and it is much appreciated.

  20. Abby Vopal says:

Deana I received my medical records for the lawyer yesterday, my ER visit alone was almost $10,000 I about puked, I also found out I had a broken tibia and fibula and a broken radius and ulna I also had 13 implanted screws not 11….it was interesting, I sat and read it for an hour! It is hot and sunny here today, so we are of course heading to the pool! My three year old, Fletcher, figured out how to dive into the deep end, he looks like micheal phelps (minus the pot and subway contract) so I for see a long day of treading water! Sophia has her last day of phonics camp this morning. Deana if you want that xerosox I will send it to you next Friday when I get my cast off! Let me know! you dont have to pay me for it, just use it and send it back when you are done! hope everyone has a great day!

  21. Deana says:

    Abby, Lucky Lucky Lucky You!!!!!

    I’m very happy for you!

Another slow day, home alone, doing legal research. How hard it must have been before the Internet. LOL

Received my first insurance statement of benefits on my first visit to the doctor here at home. WOW. They did call the putting the new splint on “surgery”. How do they get away with that? I don’t have it handy, but it was like 1400.00 or so. It was some pressing and pushing on my foot with me laying on my stomach and putting on a new splint WHICH by the way insurance didn’t cover because I had already had one when I was in TX. Oh well, I only had to pay 9.00 for the second splint. There weren’t any medical codes on the information I received and I’m not going to complain . . . I’m happy I didn’t have the slice & dice version with staples and stitches!!!! No wonder health care is in the shape it is in.

  22. Abby Vopal says:

AWESOME AWESOME NEWS! my casts are coming off three days earlier!

  23. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
I am glad you had a nice day! I want to paint my nails but my painting hand is out of commission! I definitely would be happy to have some workers comp money, we too have been saving since I cannot get to the store alone! When James is there, we get what is necessary…lol…not what I want! My kids go to school in two weeks and my husband has some meetings next week! Back to reality!

  24. Deana says:

Abby, haha we posted at the exact same time, well you must have beat me by a second or two. Glad things will work out with the lawyer and worker’s comp. I’m sure that will make a difference in the family finances for as long as you have been off. I’m a Stay-At-Home-MOM so doesn’t matter here, actually we have probably saved LOTS of money since I’m not out shopping, running around burning gas NOR am I shopping online since he can see everything that arrives in the mailbox or the front door via FedEx or UPS.

  25. Deana says:

Well, a very quiet today home ALONE with just me & the dogs (our two Shelties). It was actually very nice. Steve went back to work today . . . well he left early so he could get son at 3:00 from school, both kids gone. I piddled around a bit, straightened up here and there, did my nails. Speaking of which, I’m going for a pedicure as soon as this is over with.

  26. Abby Vopal says:

I met with the lawyer today, and she said I definitely should be receiving workers comp, so we proceed! The battle is on! On a good note, I am cooking dinner tonight, and I cleaned the kitchen today! So I am feeling domestic! 11 more days as of tomorrow and since it is getting late here, I am going with 11 more days! Yippppeeeeee!

  27. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
That sucks about the AC, we were out of power for about 2 days and I was miserable, we had to leave the house, it is hard to be hot with a cast on! glad you are getting it fixed. I think the purple cast is awesome! That is great that you were able to clean the kitchen, that is a huge accomplishment! I managed to cook dinner last night, which the foot did not complicate but the broken wrist did. We are meeting with our lawyer today about my workers compensation. I am curious to hear what she has to say! I will let you know. We are pool bound again today since the high temp is 92 with 100% humidity!

  28. Deana says:

The pool exercise sounds great. Wish I could do it too. I did get a little better at walking on the walking cast today WITH crutches still.

Yesterday, laying here, I’ve been watching the indoor and outdoor temps for last 3 weeks, especially when Sarah was outside at band camp those two weeks . . . and yesterday it was 76 inside, usually 74-75 AND then 77 and 78 and 79 and I mentioned each increase to my husband and it was cloudy yesterday too. Well, he finally went outside to look at a/c unit when it hit 79 and of course by then it was 5:30 . . . fan wasn’t turning and the unit is only 13 months old. Argh. It was so hot last night. We gathered up various oscillating fans from my exercise area and his computer room and set one to blowing on each persons bed (and my couch). This a.m. it was 83 when we woke up. A/C place called and said they’d be here around 11. Of course he didn’t have another fan motor so had to run to town to get and return. It is now 7:00 our time and it is just now hitting 78 . . .hit up to 86.4 by time repair was done. My car is still damaged from the wreck the day before our vacation. Dealer is suppose to call when new bumper etc. arrives so husband can run it in. Broke foot but healing. AND broke A/C in the HOT HOT HOT summer of the south. OK nothing else can go wrong.

Tonight should be much better. The foot was great last night in the new cast. The kids were teasing me about my PURPLE cast, it is a nice deep purple too. But I LIKE it.

Wheeled in and cleaned my kitchen last night. Steve has done pretty good but left it a MESS last night in the heat. Not easy emptying dishwasher and putting away while balancing on one leg. But hopefully it will help some.

Abby, TWO pant sizes. You’re killin’ me here!!!!! I went from exercising everyday to being a couch potato for 6 weeks now. But I don’t eat a lot, but try to eat quality vs. quantity. :)

No wine last night but a did drink a Sam Adams Double Bock. Too many calories.

  29. Abby Vopal says:

The closed reduction I had done was awful! The open reduction was a breeze since I was asleep! I also wish to never repeat either one! I am definitely enjoying the pool exercise! I am exhausted tonight, the kids are heading to bed and so am I! All this healing is exhausting!

  30. JudyT says:

    Hi Abby:

I’m a year out since my accident, but I’ve done lots of exercising in the pool. We live in Chicago but also have a place in FL, and I’m headed back there tomorrow for a week. I walk forwards and backwards, then sideways and diagonally in all directions as long as I can. I also stand at the side and do calf raises, and I’ve been doing all of this since last fall. This trip, I’m going to get a kick board and see if that helps. My ankle is still stiff and doesn’t flex well (pulling my toes up toward my shin), so I want to work on that.

In an earlier exchange, folks were talking about open and closed reductions, and I can chime in that I had both. The closed was in the Emergency Room, and I thought I screamed but the nurse told me later that I hadn’t. I did almost pass out, like others, so I must have just screamed to myself! It was not something I ever hope to repeat.

  31. Abby Vopal says:

How is everyone doing this week? I spent 4 hours in the pool yesterday and 3 today, I am trying like crazy to not lose all my leg muscle! Does anyone else have any exercises they have been doing to maintain muscle??? I am going to try aquacise on Saturday it is in the deep end so my leg will never touch the bottom of the pool. I have lost 2 pant sizes since getting injured mainly because I am eating better and exercising in the pool. I started using crutches today instead of my walker since my wrist is 100% pain free. I meet with the attorney tomorrow to deal with all of my workers comp stuff! I hope she is able to work something out since all my injuries happened at work while on the clock!!! Anyways, just wanted to see how everyone else was doing! Deana how’s the purple cast? did the kids love it?

  32. Abby Vopal says:

Yippppeee for you Deana, I am so glad it went well. I was hoping all day it would be good. The walking cast feels weird, I have had one before, just put the shoe on tight and kinda rock from the back to the front, I dont know if you have ever walked in ski boots but it is slightly similar. They asked me if I wanted pink when I got my casts but I resisted my huge urge to go with it because I knew Sophia wanted to color pink all over my white casts! Your kids are going to be psyched! I am so glad you do not need surgery! that is awesome, hang in there with the crutches for now and slowly work up to the walking cast! It will get easier each day! Did they tell you that you can still ice through a cast, I found that a bag of ice on the top and one on the side made it chill off in about 5 minutes! And if you want the xerosox for the half leg cast I will be glad to send it your way in 2 weeks!

  33. Deana says:

oops typo: my toes WEREN’T as swollen as before but definitely bigger than the other night.

  34. Deana says:

OK I am the proud owner of a new PURPLE walking cast. Thing is I can’t really walk in/on it yet. He said I could start bearing weight on it and to still use the crutches in the beginning with it.

On the way to the appointment, a 40-45 minute drive, I could literally sense my foot swelling some and when he cut off the temporary splint . . . it was so weird feeling, like the bottom half of my leg was gone. Maybe it was the weight of the splint and the bandages and wrappings, I bet they weighed 3-4 pounds and I’ve had it for 4 weeks and the one before it for 2 weeks . . . so maybe it was the feeling of having no weight.

Then in for new xrays. I just knew the doctor was going to say still too much swelling, my toes were as big as before but certainly bigger than the other night when we “peeked” as well as the foot and ankle.

Next appointment in three weeks. New purple walking cast and a “cast shoe”. When standing up, IF I put down my heel all the way it makes the rest of my foot too high. I don’t know how I’m going to actually walk with this thing. They kept wanting me to press down on my heel, as in dropping it, while my foot rested on some metal chrome strip and have my knee at 90 degree angle.

So for now, I’m on the crutches and I put down my right foot and put some weight on it but we’ll see how it goes.

Is there a learning curve to walking with your foot in a walking cast or am I just plain uncoordinated, even more so after 6 weeks of non-use????

Well, good news, NO SURGERY, yeah for me, and I have managed to live with a splint for 6 weeks come Wednesday without falling and breaking my other ankle.

It is so great to have others who have experienced these things to talk to . . . it HELPS a lot to know what others have been or going through and thing to expect, and way to manage.

I can’t wait for the kids to see Mom’s PURPLE cast. Sarah told me to get purple so I went for it. LOL.

  35. Abby Vopal says:

to any an all wondering about the ankle popping thing, I called the doctor after it happened twice last night, he said that is common and means it is healing! no need to worry! just thought I would share!

  36. Abby Vopal says:

    Aime,
Have you tried R.I.C.E. REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, AND ELEVATION….mainly the compression. Everyone I have talked to says the swelling occurs for a really long time after the injury. I guess we just have to deal with it, what has your doctor said about it?, I am curious since I will soon be dealing with this!

  37. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
I am so excited for you to have your appointment! I cannot wait to hear what they say. Sounds like your shower was awesome, isn’t it nice when you can just sit and relax and have clean hair. I hated taking a bath I never felt clean. Today is my 2 week mark, 14 more days to go! I cannot wait! Please let me know how the appointment goes! I am sure it will be good! I hope the kids have a great day at school!

  38. Deana says:

Tomorrow is the big day for doctor appointment and hopefully a cast, finally!!!

Husband helped with my shower tonight and took the old vinyl liner from the kids bathroom, got them a new one, and took the glass doors off our shower and fixed it on there and this time made a slit into it so I could stick the “trash bagged” leg out. Worked GREAT. Much less water on the floor. Felt so good to get a shower again tonight that I washed my hair twice which I don’t normally do.

Kids are back to school tomorrow and me to the doctor. Should be a hectic morning with breakfast, lunches and getting everybody off on time. :)

  39. aime says:

I broke my ankle 13 years ago. I had 5 pins. I had 2 pins removed. Having the pins removed was like having my ankles rebroken! The recovery was awful! I am fine now but my ankles will swell up every now and again (heels)
I have a problem w running…my ankle swells up every single time what to do?

  40. Abby Vopal says:

I cannot wait to be able to wear two shoes again, I have been living in mesh shorts and t shirts for about 4 weeks now, and that is totally not me! I managed to put some jeans on last night since it was cooler out! I now have added the swim suit to my wardrobe but I cannot wait to get two shoes on and a nice outfit! I asked my doctor about an ankle brace and he told me I would not have one, he told me I will get a knee brace due to my dislocating knee, but no ankle brace. The thought of walking in two weeks without a brace makes me nervous, but I trust the doctor and I guess he has seen people with these injuries before so he must know.
There is a woman that works at the hospital where I work and she had a similar injury as I had and she said she is able to wear about a 1 1/2 inch – 2 inch heal but it has been about 10 months. So I can live with flats heels are not necessary. Plus it is easier to chase kids in flats… For now I am sticking with my nike air pegasus tennis shoes, they are so comfy!

Wendi, that is good about your riding shoes. I have trouble with certain brands and styles of boots with my high instep. I can’t get my foot in just any ole shoe or boot.

I bought a new pair of Ariat clog style shoes at the end of last season to wear with jeans & cords and they have about 2″ heel so don’t know that I’ll be wearing them this winter.

I’m thinking I’ll probably want to get some type of velcro ankle brace for the first few weeks . . . I guess . . . I really have no idea but I’m sure they’ll guide me through the recovery process at the doctors office.

    Deanna,

I wear a riding shoe and yes they actually make a shoe you can ride in. It has the same heel as a riding boot. I couldn’t get my boot up and over the ankle so my husband bought me the riding shoes. They go over my ankle but not like my boot does. When I first started wearing shoes I wore tennis shoes. They seemed to be the best.

My ankle pops all the time, doc said it was no big deal. It’s not HIS ankle though, is it?

    Hi Y’all

I don’t know about other ladies here, I’m not a huge shoe person, what with my crazy feet anyway, high arches, slightly wide foot and hammer toes and double jointed-ness . . . but I sure have been thinking about shoes a LOT lately. Maybe it is because I haven’t had any on in over a month, well I wear a single Nike Shox to my doctor appointments. I’m wondering how it will be wearing shoes, what kind I can wear in the beginning. I actually LOST the shoes I had on when I fell. Maybe they are in TX at my Dad’s house or maybe they fell out of the car along the way home. I’ve had my Dad search and then when my sister was over she looked for them too and they are nowhere to be found.

I’m thinking about boots too for the winter. Will I be able to wear them IF they are low heel, 2″ or less? IF they are inner leg side zip? Wendi, do you wear riding boots when riding your horse? One of my favorite pairs of boots back in TX before my feet outgrew them after having two kids, was my Dan Post lizard boots with riding heels, loved those boots.

Maybe tonight I will dream of wearing new outfits & purses and not dream about shoes. LOL Just kidding.

thanks wendi! glad to know I am not the only one who had the popping! I feel better about it now, I am heading to bed soon, to ice and elevate again! It cannot hurt! Hope everyone has a good night!

  46. wendi says:

Just to relieve you guys the popping is normal. I freaked out at first but then was told it was nothing serious.

  47. Deana says:

Abby, I also hope the popping was nothing serious and maybe just your bones relaxing. I know I’ve had to lift my foot and the air to “pop” my knee some as it gets a little stiff laying here with it straight and and foot on pillow but sometimes I have it high enough that my knee and thigh are at an angle.

Mine was more like a little shooting quiver of or shot of pain, nothing bad, just enough to make you go whoa! I did use ice today and yesterday, not sure what good it does, maybe helps the circulation or something???

  48. Abby Vopal says:

    Deana,
I had some weird popping feelings in my ankle the last two nights, not sure what it was but I am guessing nothing serious. At least I hope not! Glad you are doing well, and getting some peace and quiet with the kids gone. I am sure you will be in tip top shape for the cruise. Really all you have to do is lay in a lawn chair, get a tan, and eat lots of food! No problem for you! plan on going! I am down to 2 weeks and one day, for the casts after today, I am hoping your appt is awesome on Monday, I cannot wait to hear about it! Keep me posted, enjoy the weekend!
    Abby

    Hi Abby

I hope you had a better day today and have all your food and elevation & icing routines back to normal now that you are back home.

Not much news here, more research on the Internet Thursday & Friday and today just a lazy day. Kids and husband went shopping for back to school stuff and lunch stuff yesterday. They go back MONDAY.

ONE MORE DAY . . . I go back to doctor on Monday so hoping for good news. Had a few little weird pains in my ankle yesterday so had husband re-wrap the outer ace bandage as I think it wasn’t as snug as before after we took it off for a sneak peek on Thursday night.

We’re, well my father-in-law, is planning a huge family cruise over Christmas so hoping my ankle is much better for excursions, walks on the beach while in port, etc. etc. Otherwise I’ll be walking with Grandma most of the time. She is nice but talks a lot.

That was very mean of the person on Facebook about the walker. Guess they’ve never had a broken ankle or else they’d know better and apologize and then keep their mouth shut when they can’t say something nice. :)

I had some wine last night so I better not have more tonight. :)

Today I am praying to the broken ankle gods that the next 15 1/2 days go really fast! I am tired of being casted! I pulled weeds this morning and did some small yard work that only involves one hand. We are heading out of the house this afternoon because I hate to sit around! Hopefully I will be able to sit outside tonight because it is pretty nice outside!

Deana, I am having my glass of wine tonight! I will toast to your recovery! Hope you are feel great today!
