Mountainair Animal Shelter: Can you help?

I received the below email today from a close friend of mine and I know I care deeply about all animals and therefore I thought I would post the email and a link to the pictures.  I know there are alot of people out there who care about animals and its sad that places like this exist.  The animals don’t stand a chance!  I know there are probably more out there but this one I’m aware of and so I thought I would post about it.  If you can help please do….

Construction of a new Animal Shelter for the Town of Mountainair -a community project initiated and coordinated by Deer Canyon Preserve homeowners.

The idea for this project arose when members of the Deer Canyon Community realized the inadequacy of the present Animal shelter and the fact that there is no money in the current or proposed Town budget earmarked to address this need. The existing facility, on town land beside the Rodeo Grounds, consists of 5 small unheated pens with minimal runs. The lack of fencing makes vandalism and harassment of the animals persistent problems. Our local animals in need deserve better treatment.

After discussions with the mayor and town animal control officer, a committee of Deer Canyon homeowners was formed. A quote for a 28×52 steel building with 12 dog pens, a cattery, quarantine room, food storage room, and office space came in at just under $16,000. Even with some donated materials and extensive volunteer labor, costs for site preparation (including bringing electricity to the building), the cement pad, inside finish work, and exterior fencing will probably bring the total cost of the project to $30,000. The Walkathon scheduled for Sunday, October 18 at 9:00 am to begin at the Preserve Center just inside the north gate to Deer Canyon Preserve will kick off fundraising efforts for the project. The entry fee for walkers is $20.00 and we hope all who sign up for the 5-mile walk on Deer Canyon Preserve roads will solicit donations from among their family and friends so that their efforts will pay off far beyond the entry fee.

Mountainair is a small town, the town closest to the Preserve, which the Preserve residents will frequent for their supplies. No McMansions. Families have lived there for a very long time, and there are several artists to add some wonderful interest, but little money. In other words, limited support for the needs of 4-legged residents. I walked the 5 miles this morning – YIKES – not Florida flatland. However, it was so beautiful. After the walk, the town “dogcatcher” opened the “dogpound” and it is so sad. The animal control officer for the town is a young gal who says she is only supposed to spend 1 hour a day cleaning-up after the dogs, feeding and exercising them. She says she gets many strays and abused animals that there is no room to take care of cats with the dogs, and she has no time to try to work with the animals to get them to be able to socialize. There is no electricity, the animals are at the mercy of the weather. Walmart is donating food.

All the TAX-DEDUCTIBLE donations to this fundraising event will be used for construction costs. There are many local neglected animals that desperately need our help but cannot ask for themselves. Please be generous.

Make checks payable to the Town of Mountainair and indicate Animal Shelter Fund on the memo line. Mail your donation to Mountainair Animal Shelter Fund, PO Box 496, Mountainair, NM 87036 – or hand deliver the form and your donation to the Deer Canyon Preserve Office (105 E. Broadway) or to any Deer Canyon homeowner. For more information about this project, contact Dee Melaragno, 505-847-0402, [email protected].

I have to add, unless you look, you don’t realize everywhere is not as good as your own neighborhood. Remember, the critters just want to be friends, but need some basic food, shelter and respect for their needs.

Cat Seizures

The other day our cat, Chunk (2 years old), had a grand mal seizure.  I woke up in the middle of the night to him darting off of our bed and when he got to the floor he collasped on his side and started seizing.  He also started salivating profusely.  All of this lasted for several minutes before the seizing stopped.  It took him a couple of minutes for him to become coherent again.

The next day we called an made an appointment with the vet who did some blood work and offered to do a CAT scan.  The blood work came back normal.  She then told me that she highly didn’t recommend getting the CAT scan don, as she put it then you would know one way or another if he has brain tumors but what are you going to do with that knowledge?  Good point.  So right now we are assuming he has epilepsy as when the blood work is normal thats what they then assume.  She told us that we could start medication right away, 2 times a day for the rest of his life, or we can monitor it for now.  What they recommended is that if he has more then 1 major (grand mal) seizure in a month or 2-4 cluster seizures in several days that he should get put on medication.  Since this medication is really hard on a cats body we are monitoring him for the time being.

Has anyone else had a cat who has epilepsy?  Any advice you can give us?  Did you put your cat on medication?

Traveling with Pets

Its summertime and what do allot of us do during the summer, travel! Which means if you have a pet you have to decide whether to leave them at home during that time, board them, or take them along. Well I don’t know about you but my cats would be scared to death if I boarded them. If its for a long trip I usually ask friends and family to take care of them. Some time though, like if you have a dog, you want to take them with you. I have found a site that will make that easier for you. Lets say you are traveling more than a day and you need to find a motel that will let you keep you pets there this site will do it. All you do is put in where you are starting and where your ending destination is and it will tell you the pet friendly establishments along the way. I think this is a great idea it would make my life one step simpler if I was traveling with animals.

Illinios Help-A-Pet Program

I wrote earlier about how I thought it would be great to start a non-profit organization to be able to help people who have pets but cannot necessarily afford the veterinary care they might need. So I went looking online to see if such a place existed and what do you know it does. It is almost exactly what I was thinking about starting only in Illinois. Its called Help-A-Pet and every dollar that you donate to them goes straight to help the animals. They are doing exactly what I was thinking where they have voluntary vets and they have people apply for the vet help. There are a couple of things that I would do differently but its great to see that something like that is out there. I wonder if such a place exists in Minnesota?

Non-Profit to Benefit Animals and their Owners

Last week I took one of my cats for his yearly update of shots and checkup and I came up with an idea. I wish somewhere there was a non-profit for people who can’t necessarily afford to take their animals to the vet when they should, whether its for an animal needs their yearly shots or a surgery. Its not that I can’t afford to take my animals in but I do know allot of people who love their animals dearly and have no problem feeding and housing them but they might not be able to take them to the vets like they should. Lets be honest its expensive to go the vet even for the routine things. I took my cat in for an annual check up and 3 shots and it was a $100. Thats not cheap. I would think that in the beginning you could find vets to donate their time to the cause but as this non-profit grew you should be able to employ vets for this cause. I don’t know if a place like this exists already or how you would even start a place like this but I think its a great idea to help out people who love their animals dearly but may not be able to help them in all the ways that they want to. What do you think does a place like this exist? If not how would one go about starting it?

Bringing a puppy into a two cat household

So I’ve been thinking it would be nice to have a dog, especially during the summer when you are always out and about.  My only concern with getting a puppy is that I already have two very spoiled cats.  I don’t want to cause them to get royally pissed off and I’m wondering if they will adjust to it or it that would push them over the edge.  When we got our second cat our first cat took several months for her to adjust to having another cat in the household.  We even took the time and introduced them slowly and even did it right after we moved so that she wouldn’t feel quite so much like the queen of the domain.  I don’t know how well she or the other one who is a chicken thru and thru would adapt.  My brother has a young dog that I was thinking of bringing over one of these days to see how the cats would do especially since this one just loves to play especially with cats.  Any tips or advice on how you think my cats would handle this?

Hair Cuts for Cats

Well its spring again and most of you cat owners know what that means…. shedding.  We have a short haired cat and a long haired cat.  Our short haired cat won’t let us brush her and sheds quite a bit but she’s skittish so there is not much to do there.  Our long haired cat lets us brush him for a while but it seems that we never get all of it out before he gets fed up.  So yesterday we decided to go to a little more drastic measures.  We decided to trim his hair with a razor.  He actually laid there pretty calm and let us trim his hair up.  I was impressed.  I do have to say that he looks pretty good also!  Does anyone have any suggestions on hair brushes that cat don’t seem to mind and get most of the hair out?  Or has anyone else done this?

Why Paint Cats-Cruelty or not?

I got an email the other day that contained pictures of cats that had been painted.  When I say painted I don’t mean on a canvas no instead the fur of the cats had been painted with different colors.  To me this just seems strange and cruel as who would do something like that to their cats…. Don’t cats have enough color on their fur?  I’m curious why people would do this to their cats?  I know my cats and I have a feeling they would spend the rest of the day licking the paint off of their fur.  Which then makes you think wouldn’t that be bad for them to ingest?  What do you think?

Here’s some picture examples:

Cats & Christmas Tree Deterrents

Well its happened… last weekend we went away and came back and hmmm our Christmas tree had tipped over.  We have never had this happen even though our small cat, Sassy loves to climb the tree and sleep in it.  Last year we tried a boundary spray and we thought that it worked but after having to do it twice a day and it does not smell pretty let me tell you, it was not the best.  Especially because it would only deter our cats for about 15 minutes.  Any ideas from you cat owners out there about ways to keep our cats away from the tree?  Right now we use water but that only works until you get presents and then you don’t want to drench them.  We’ve tried foil that did nothing.  Any ideas I would greatly appreciate!!!

What does your Cat’s Name Mean?

Have you ever wondered what the most popular cat names are? Or how about you just want some suggestions on what to name a cat? Or you would like to know what your cat name means? Well if so I have the site for you its called Kitty Names.  This site will tell you exactly what your cats name means and it will give you a suggestion for different cat names in categories such as movie stars, drinks, and personality.  For mine I didn’t have to worry Sassy fits her personality name and my other kitty chunk also fits his name but its fun to get ideas for a new animal.
