The joy of toilet paper.

toilet paper

Lily has recently found the joy of toilet paper.

It’s soft, it’s within reaching range, easy to grab, and it just keeps coming the more and more we pull.

Needless to say, all toilet paper has been removed from the holder and is up high where little hand’s can’t get.

I sometimes wish that I enjoyed the simple things in life like this!!

It’s hard to update the daddy blog when someone gets up at 4:30am.

430amYou may have noticed that my posts have been few and far between lately. It seems that Lily has gotten into a habit of not wanting to go to bed easily, and then getting up at 4:30 in the morning.

This leaves Dad taking care of Lily instead of perusing the internet and writing blog posts.

I’m hoping this is just a phase and it’ll soon pass like all others.

We’re thinking she’s waking up early because her diaper is over full and she becomes uncomfortable. Then once she’s up, she likes to stay up.

So tonight we put on some overnight diapers to see if that’ll help.

Here’s hoping.

Dear mosquitoes, stop biting my baby girl.

mosquitoI love Minnesota, but the mosquitoes are no fun. Nearly every day my wife, baby girl and I go for a walk. And nearly every day, we get bit by mosquitoes.

I joke that Lily has mosquitopox. The red bumps make me think of chickenpox, but lucky for us, they’re not.

We’ve tried getting a clip-on Off proctor but that didn’t do much good. Now we are trying kids mosquito spray and seeing if that helps. We put it on the stroller and on Lily in hopes of keeping those darn mosquitoes away.

It’ll be nice come fall when the mosquitoes die off, but for now, the battle is on and I’m determined to win.

Lily’s first birthday party!

Lily’s first birthday party went off quite well. Unfortunately, one set of grandparents couldn’t make it due to illness, but it’s better they stay away than spread it to everyone else.

Other than that we had good food, cake and fun. Lily got to see some people she doesn’t see as often and she got to be the center of attention; which she loves.

Mom and I got her a few gifts but she wasn’t overloaded on presents. At least not yet. I’m sure more will be coming in the upcoming weeks.

Lily also got to eat her birthday cake and make a mess. We all had fun with that one. Well until about 10pm when she wouldn’t go to sleep because of all the sugar. We decided then that she’ll never get frosting again. ;)

Even though Lily’s birthday is technically over, I’m sure there will be more celebrating to come as not everyone was able to make it. That’s good though as we can share the love and extend the party!

Plus there are many more photos over on Flickr!

Lily turns 1 today!

Time sure does fly. Last year we were having a baby and now we have a 1 year old!

Look how tiny Lily was! This is at 7 days old.

Then 7 months old.

And then 11 months old.

With all the growing she’s done in the past year, I can’t imagine what’s around the corner, but we’re ready for it. As ready as we’ll ever be.

Happy Birthday Lily. You are one sweet little girl!

Lily has a new, unhappy, look.

Unhappy Look

Unhappy Look

When you have a new baby, you can’t wait for them to start smiling and acknowledging your existence. Once they do start, it’s so cute and wonderful.

Then one day, they realize they can do more than just a smiley face; they can do an unhappy face. And Lily has just figured that out.

So far it’s kind of funny. I just can’t take her seriously when she puts on her unhappy face. Mainly because it goes away seconds later. I think it’s mostly for show at his time.

In the picture, she’s not even doing it as good as she can. It’s just hard to get the picture at just the right time. But you get the idea.

What did you do for your babies first birthday?

Eating an early birthday doughnut.

Eating an early birthday doughnut.

Lily’s first birthday is less than a week away now. However, we aren’t doing anything too special. I mean she’s one, she won’t know what’s going on.

One year is a big milestone and we are going to have some cake and the grandparents over, but won’t go all out. When she’s older, and knows what a birthday party is, then we’ll have a lot more going on. But for a one year old, is the party really for her, or is it for the parents?

Maybe we should think of it as a ‘we survived the first year of parenting’ party.

I’ve heard of other people throwing big parties and doing all sorts of festivities and was wondering what you did.

FYI: Lily ate maybe two or three bites of that doughnut. Dad had a few bites and a lot of it ended up on the ground.

10 Things I learned while traveling with a baby.

Airplane ride!

Airplane ride!

Last week was our first big vacation as a family. We packed everything up and flew out to San Diego; which is about a 4 hour flight.

Here are a few things I learned while traveling with a baby.

  1. If you can, travel with your spouse. I couldn’t imagine having done this trip alone. From getting through security to entertaining the baby, having two people is better than one. If you can, travel with a third person too. We had one grandma come with us and the three to one ratio worked out well.
  2. Think about time zones. This is one we never thought of, but California time is not the same as Minnesota time. If you can start adjusting sleep schedules before you go, that’ll help. Otherwise, be prepared to have a harder night the first day or two as your baby goes though the adjustment.
  3. Dress for airport security. I for one didn’t do this well. I’ve been though security many times, but never with a stroller or a baby or baby food. My shoes were hard to take off, my belt was holding my pants up so when that came off I had to worry about my pants falling down. Overall, I could have dressed better.
  4. Take baby food with you. The 3 ounce rule doesn’t apply to jarred baby food. We did have to tell security that we had it and it had to be taken out of the bag so it could get scanned/sniffed separately. But overall it wasn’t an issue. So do take it with you.
  5. Feed the baby on takeoff and landing. This worked out really well for us. Lily had a bottle at takeoff and ate poofs while landing. Because of this, she didn’t have any issues with the changing air pressure and her ears.
  6. Let them sleep on the airplane. What’s a better way to pass the time than sleeping? Work with your little one to ensure they don’t get their nap until just after takeoff. Lily slept 3 out of 4 hours on our return flight and it was wonderful.
  7. Make time to play. On vacation, sometimes it’s just go go go. If you do that too much, you’ll end up with a crabby baby who just wants to play with you and their toys. Make some time in the mornings and evenings where they can just be free to play.
  8. Use painters tape to cover outlets in the hotel. Instead of worrying about little fingers getting into the outlets, take painters tape to cover them up. Goes on easy, comes off clean and works great!
  9. Take lots of toys. Any distractions are good, and you’ll need a variety. In the air or on the ground, finding something to distract your child is very important.
  10. Relax. Chances are it’s not as bad as you think it’s going to be. Our first flight was very good and we survived traveling with an active 11 month old.

Overall, the thought of traveling with a baby is probably worse than the actual event as long as you prepare yourself and your child.

Baby girl has a fever and I don’t like it.

Baby FeverSo Lily has never really been sick before. There were times I thought she was, and times that she had small cold, but now she’s got a fever!

Her fever was 102 earlier and 103 at bedtime.

The good news is she didn’t act any differently, ate and drank well, and shows no other signs of illness.

I called the nurse line and they pretty much said to keep an eye on her behavior and give it a couple of days.

Lets hope when she wakes up, she’s feeling much better as I don’t like seeing my little girl sick.

Can you baby proof a hotel room?

Painter's TapeI han’t thought of baby proofing a hotel room before, but now that Lily is moving around a lot everything needs to be baby proofed. Well, as much as it can be. We’ve been to a few hotels with Lily, but she wasn’t this mobile before.

Now that we are about to embark on a vacation, we have a hotel room to think about. Baby proofing is hard to do though when you don’t even know what it looks like.

One good idea that was shared with us was to bring painters tape and tape over the outlets so little fingers don’t get in there.

Looking around the internet I found obvious answers like look for cords that should be tied up, look for things on the floor or under the bed, and make sure the TV is stable. I think there has to be other creative tips out there.

Have you had to baby proof a hotel room? What did you do?
