The fastest browser on my Mac is Firefox 5.

Fastest Mac Browser

I tested four browsers with the SunSpider tests and it turns out that Firefox 5 was faster than Chrome, Safari and Opera. This was quite surprising to me as it beat out Chrome but quite a bit. It’s also interesting how far behind Safari is.

Opera 10.5 – 534.0ms +/- 1.4%
Chrome 12 – 524.6ms +/- 4.6%
Safari 5.0.5 – 566.9ms +/- 4.2%
Firefox 5 – 448.8ms +/- 0.9%

Now the tests aren’t scientific by any means, but they do represent my computer on a normal day. I’d suggest you run them for yourself and see what you come out with.

From Chrome to Safari to Firefox and back again.

chrome safari firefox

It seems that I can’t find a browser that is perfect. I try them all, I love parts of them all, and there are always things I don’t like.

With Chrome, its startup speed is annoying me. It takes a while to do something on startup and I’m not sure what that is. I think it’s loading the start page images, but whatever it is, its been taking to long. It seems you can’t go anywhere until it’s got that thing done so I’m stuck wanting to go somewhere, but can’t.

So I switched to Safari.

16 Mac Apps That I Can’t Live Without

The other day I bit the bullet and erased my iMac. I wanted to combine my partitioned drive into one and I wanted to clean out the crud.

Now my iMac is neat and clean again. I’m being very cautious of what apps I put back on as I don’t want to add a bunch of stuff that just ends up slowing down my machine again.

So far, here are the 16 Mac apps that I realized I can’t live without.

1Password

1Password – Most of my passwords and serial numbers are organized in 1Password. Without it, I’d be lost. I’ve tried LastPass but found 1Password much nicer on the Mac.

Use Google Chrome’s Private Browsing To Login To Multiple Accounts

Google Chrome WindowIf you’re like me and you need to access multiple accounts on the same service, like different Gmail or Twitter accounts, on a daily basis, logging in and out gets to be a pain. You could always just open up a different browser, but that’s annoying too.

Google Chrome however has a good work around as you can use private browsing to login to multiple accounts without ever having to log out of your current account.

Basically, when you start a new incognito (private) window in Google Chrome, you get a fresh start. You’re not logged into anything which is very handy. You can then log into a different Google, Twitter, Facebook or whatever account you want to.

Should Web Developers Switch To Google Chrome?

Nettuts+ tries to make the argument that web developers should switch to Google Chrome but I’m not buying it.

Google Chrome LogoTheir reasoning?

  1. It’s cross platform. – But so is Safari, Firefox and Opera.
  2. Web Inspector – Which Safari also has.
  3. Extensions – Which Firefox has many more of, and better ones too.

It’s a nice article, but nothing too convincing unless you’ve never checked out the same features in Firefox and Safari.

I’m sticking with Firefox as my Firebug extension is indispensable and Firebug light just doesn’t cut it.

Google Chrome Themes Are Mac Friendly

Google recently launched a theme gallery for Chrome. Much to my enjoyment, these themes are Mac friendly too and can be used with the latest development builds of Chrome.

These themes can’t even begin to compare to some of the great Firefox themes, but it’s nice start.

How To Get Google Chrome’s Start Page in Firefox

Since I’ve been playing with Google Chrome, I’ve wanted the start page to be available in Firefox. There are a number of extensions and work arounds, but none that actually work well. That was until I found the Google Toolbar.

A new feature in Google Toolbar 5 is Chrome’s start page functionality. Once you install the toolbar on Firefox, you’ll get the option of enabling it.

One downside I found, other than having to install the whole toolbar, is that it only worked on new tabs, not on new windows. I did some fiddling and was able to work around that by adding the following URL as Firefox’s home page in the preferences.

5 Mac Browsers, Racing To Be The Fastest

June sure is shaping up to be a good month to be a Mac web geek! Every few days there is a new browser being released and they are all the fastest browser on the net.

Fast Mac Browsers

Apple just introduced Safari 4. It has ‘remarkable’ new features as is the world’s fastest web browser according to Apple.

Firefox 3.5 will be here soon, and it’s shaping up to be by far the fastest Firefox yet: more than twice as fast as Firefox 3 and 10 times as fast as Firefox 2. That’s some serious speed.

Hello Google Chromium for Mac

Google Chrome Mac LogoWe’ve been waiting and waiting for Google Chrome to come out for the Mac and, unfortunately, we have to wait some more. Unless, that is, you are adventurous. If you are, you can download Google Chromium; the development version of Google Chrome for Mac.

The good news here is that Google Chromium works pretty well. I’ve been running it for a few days with no crashes. It seems speedy, renders pages well and really impressed me for a pre-alpha browser.
