Verify your Facebook account with Google Voice or Pinger without texting.

If you try and sign up for a Facebook account, Facebook will require you to enter in a phone number to verify you are a human. Then they will text you a verification number. This is all fine and dandy if you have a cellphone and texting plan.

If you are using Google Voice or Pinger you won’t be able to verify your account though as those services don’t support short code texting; which is what Facebook uses to verify.

However, you can verify via a phone call.

Basically what you need to do is be patient. The first day Facebook will require you to verify via text. No matter how many times you try, they’ll block you from your account until you verify.

Try back every day and eventually Facebook will allow you to verify via phone. It took about 3 days last time I checked, but you will get the option.

The downside to verifying via phone is that Facebook phone servers are often busy. So you may get a message to try back later.

Unfortunately it’s not always quick and easy, but you can verify your Facebook account without texting. This allows Google Voice, Pinger and land lines to actually verify Facebook accounts.

It took a while to show up. I don’t know if there is an exact number, but keep trying and eventually it should show.

This does not work in July 2012

why does facebook think it needs my phone number anyway? With their sordid history of info piracy there’s a snowball’s chance in hell that they’ll get an actual mobile number out of me.

They just want to make sure all users are real people and stop people from creating fake accounts to do bad things.

Just face it, Facebook is EVIL.

So, the call will take a while to come right?

I never was able to get though to get Facebook to call me unfortunately. They kept saying they were busy. So I don’t know how long it takes. 🙁

I got this done in about 20 minutes (not 3 days) by just trying to verify repeatedly. It got to a point where after clicking the “confirm” button, Facebook put up a message saying something like “we have tried multiple codes and it didn’t work, please see {help link}.”

I waited 10 minutes and tried again. This time it offered both “send me a text” and “call me”. I chose the latter, got the call on my GV number moments later, and completed the verification.

  9. Thanks, this is very informative, timely since HuffPost now requires a verified facebook account to post comments. Many people do not own cell phones, have been looking for alternative or land line verification. Could the author of this post update his information, would be very useful.
