Chicklet Creator WordPress Plugin

Now available for download is the Chicklet Creator WordPress plugin. It’s very similar to the social bookmark links plugin I released a few days ago.

Included in the plugin are the button images and the plugin file.

Install & Configure Instructions [new location]
1) Download the plugin. Version 0.1
2) Open chicklet-creator.php and configure it. Turn on the buttons you want and set up a few optional features.
3) Upload the entire Chicklet-Creator folder into your WordPress plugins directory.
4) Activate it via the Plugins area in the admin.
5) Put this code where you want the social bookmark links to show up: < ? chicklet_creator() ? > (remove the space before the first ? and after the last ?)
– This code should work anywhere in your blog template.
– If you de-active the plugin, you have to remove this code or you’ll throw errors!

I have built in the option to change the feed URL. For those of you who use Feedburner, you’ll want to make sure to configure that in the plugin file.

As I learn more about WordPress plugins I’ll make this easier to use. But for now, it works.

Feedback is much appreciated. Even if it’s just to say ‘It Worked!’. Suggestions are welcome too. 🙂

Thanks for the plugin! Anyway how do i make my chicklet feed plugin look like yours (links only) i dont want too much images.. i like only anchor links.

  2. Thomas says:

marcel – Just link’s isn’t an option. With the feed plugin it’s buttons. If you are talking about the BlinkList del.icio.us digg links at the end of posts, use the Social Bookmark plugin.

  3. DH says:

I am not getting the chicklet feed to show up. DO you paste the into a php doc? If so does anyone have a suggestion on a good spot for it?? THanks.

  4. Thomas says:

Can you post your site so I can see what’s happening. By default, it should work with the WordPress 2 code just fine. Are you running WordPress 2?

  5. Marcel says:

Thomas, thanks for the quick response. Again thanks for the plugin… good luck

This whole blog thing is soooooo…..new to me. So far I found a beautiful skin/template to use. And, I think I’ve got the chicklet thing to work. Tweeking so much is forcing me to learn and/or read more html than I really care to but I don’t mine I guess. At least I’m learning something new. The template I’m using has the cute little graphics beside each chicklet graphic that I can’t seem to get rid of. I’m sure it’s somewhere in the html code but I can’t figure out what it is. Anyway.. Can someone check my blog to see if my chicklets are working. Boy..that request kinda sounds funny huh? LOL!

  11. Thomas says:

    Nancy

  14. Thomas says:

Nancy send an email to the address in the instructions and I’ll help you through email. It’s ok to be lost. 🙂

Is there any way to add aFeedburner email subscribe form and chicklet to a standard WordPress .com? Thanks, I’m new to WordPress, just getting ready to migrate over from Blogger.

  18. Terren says:

Hey there Thomas, great plugin. I’ve written a ‘page’ script that may be desirable to some of your users. If you’re interested, I can email it to you. Thanks!

  19. Thomas says:

Do send it on over or leave a link. Thanks.

  23. Brent says:

I don’t know if anyone else had this problem, but after uploading the Chicklet-Creator folder to the plugins directory, it wouldn’t show up in the plugins pannel in WordPress. I have no clue what the problem is. The Social Bookmark Plugins works perfectly fine for me. Also, I was able to get the Chicklet plugin to appear in the WordPress pannel by uploading the files without being contained in the Chicklet-Creator folder, but the the plugin wouldn’t work propperly, of course. The only main drawback was that none of the images would show up. Any suggestions would be much appriciated.

  24. Thomas says:

Interesting Brent. I assume you are in WordPress 2 and that the folder is named Chicklet-Creator and placed in the plugins directory. Inside the Chicklet-Creator folder is chicklet-creator.php and the RSS-images folder. Correct? Don’t forget everything is case sensitive.

  25. Brent says:

    Thanks for the reply Thomas.

I have WordPress2, the folder’s in the correct directory, and the letters’ cases are all the way the should be. The installation problem is really a mystery.

However, I hacked my way around the problem yesterday. After messing around with the code and trying various methods of installing, such as placing the chicklet-creator.php directly into the plugins folder without the container folder, “Chicklet-Creator.” Doing that enabled me to install the plugin. None of the images appeared of course becasue I messed up the directory structure. So, I manally changed chicklet-creator.php so that all the SRCs of the image tags would point to the images in the RSS-images folder. The plugin now works perfectly for me. I just thought you might find my instalation problems interesting. I still don’t have a clue why it wouldn’t install the easy way.

The plugin is really awesome and very easy to use. It was easily worth having to change the file manually.

If you want, I can look into my installation problem some more, if it would be any use to you. Just let me know.

  26. Thomas says:

Brent – So far it’s just you with an issue that big. There have been a few other minor issues and I’ve encountered one myself just the other day. Not sure what’s going on but something seems fishy. Glad you got it to work though. 🙂

  27. Mary says:

    Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the plugin. I installed it a few months ago and it’s worked fine up to now, however I’ve just started getting an annoying flashing message appearing in my chicklets saying ‘Important: Get New Buttons’.

Do you know how to get rid of this?

    Thanks,
    Mary

  28. Angela says:

    Thanks i got easiest way.
    it start working.

  29. Aimee says:

    Hi Thomas,

This is a great idea; however, WordPress is telling me that they don’t allow uploads of plugins. Do I need to upgrade my account, or am I looking in the wrong places?

    Thanks much,
    Aimee

  30. Aimee says:

Figured it out on my own, sorry to clog your comments!

  31. Thomas says:

Aimee – What was the issues in case others have a similar issue?

  32. Aimee says:

I’m using a wordpress.com blog, not running the wordpress.org application on my own server. *facepalm*

  33. lynn says:

This seems like a great plugin, however, I’m having a few problems with it:

    1) Image files aren’t showing up in either the options->chicklet creator tab of WP or on my site, with the exception of winksite, which only shows in the tab area.

    2) Everytime I click on ‘update feed buttons’ I get the message, “Cannot load Chicklet-Creator/chicklet-creator.php”

I’m using WP 2.0.5 btw and have tested this with FF and Safari.

I’d love to get this working if anyone can help!

    Thanks 🙂

  34. lynn says:

    Sorry, couple more notes…

    1) Not all checkboxes in the tab area have text fields so it’s impossible to know what they are. I’m assuming this intentional

    2) Seems that changes actually *do* update if you hit the ‘update’ button despite the message that it cannot find the file.

    3) Weird that it only finds that one random image file… which has me the most baffled.

  35. Thomas says:

    lynn –
    1) Did you upload the whole Chicklet-Creator folder into the plugins folder?
    /wp-content/plugins/Chicklet-Creator/
    2) Back to question #1.

  36. Thomas says:

Lynn – It sounds as if you did everything right. Maybe issues in the download or upload of files? Have you tried re-installing? It’s hard for me to troubleshoot when I can’t see the issues so I hope I’m helping a bit.

  37. lynn says:

I just figured it out. I had to rename folder to ‘chicklet-creator’ (ie, drop ‘folder’ from the name).

How ridick. Anyway, off to chickletize…

    Thanks

  38. Thomas says:

Glad you go it to work.

  39. Andreas says:

it worked and thank you very much. this is just what i’ve been looking for.!!! A++

  40. JT says:

I am getting the same error “Still getting Cannot load Chicklet-Creator/chicklet-creator.php”,
I do have the following created:
    /wp-content/plugins/Chicklet-Creator/chicklet-creator.php
    /wp-content/plugins/Chicklet-Creator/RSS-images/
    and added to my sidebar.php,
i could have possibly added it to the wrong area, but i added inserted it on the second line in this file. I do see text on the sidebar, but no icons,
Not sure its right, but am i missing something else?
    thanks in advance!
    j

  41. Thomas says:

    JT
The issue here is that the folder was renamed to chicklet-creator. It needs to be capital C’s as it’s a case sensitive technology.

Rename your file to Chicklet-Creator (capital C’s) and it’ll work.

  42. Summer says:

piece o’ cake. Thanks so much.

  43. EJ says:

    Hi Thomas.

I’m doing an install for a friend of mine from a fresh install of WordPress 2.3 and no matter where I place the code, the chicklets do not appear.

    You can look here: http://scenestars.net/blog

The function call is placed in the sidebar.php directly above the Meta area. I have also tried placing it in a widget. Nothing works.

    Advice?

  44. Thomas says:

Ej – It looks as if you have other code working already. Are you still trying to get my plugin working?

  45. Black Hornet says:

Is there a related widget for this?

  46. Thomas says:

There is no widget for this plugin.

  47. Joanna says:

I activated the plugin and placed it in the sidebar.php file. It just does not show up at all and I can’t find help anywhere- even on the wordpress forum. WHAT am I missing, it’s driving me nuts. Please take a look at my site http://www.woofgangs.com if possible. Does it have to be placed in one of the boxes within the sidebar?

  48. Mobius says:

    Thanks for the Plugin 🙂

  49. Very useful plugin. I recommend giving an easy option to use it as a widget will be great. I’m writing a review on my blog about the plugin 🙂

  50. As promised I have added an honest review about your plugin. The only suggestion would be give an easy option to use it as a widget…

  51. Tim says:

Your plugin is just what I have been needing and searching for but it doesn’t seem to work.

  52. Eddie says:

    Hi Thomas…
I’m a bit confused… where exactly should I put the code? I mean the chicklet creator… I have already installed it in my wordpress plug-in.. please help..

    • Bill Vlasak says:

The chicklet will automatically get added if you have a subscribe form in your sidebar.Since I use the Feedburner simplified form it merely adds a Feedburner Counter link and clicking it brings you to the feed with the chicklet options.
In order for it to work as intended you need to go into the theme editor in your dashboard and add [CODE] [/CODE] to your sidebar.php
This info is in the readme text in the plug-in editor [dashboard] for the chicklet-creator plug-in .

  53. Bill Vlasak says:

the above code is without the spaces [ shown with spaces to prevent activation in the blog here].

  54. Bill Vlasak says:

    OK: still wont show–it is a php code ,so without the function stuff lets’ try — if (function_exists(‘chicklet_creator’)) { chicklet_creator(); }

If you still can’t see it ,go to the plug-in editor readme text .
