Well I just heard the rumors this morning that Google and Sun were working together to make an Office application; Word, Excel and so fourth. I found it hard to believe, but CNet is reporting that it’s true!

Under terms of the widely expected announcement, the companies will cooperate to make it easier for consumers to acquire Sun’s Java runtime, Google’s Toolbar and the OpenOffice.org desktop suite.

The major part here is OpenOffice.org. I’ve blogged about alternatives to Microsoft Office in the past and OpenOffice.org is one of them. It’s great to see Google jump on board to help promote the free alternative. Now I don’t see many more details that what CNet gives, but hopefully Google has some tricks up their sleeve.

Maybe online Office using Ajax technology? It’s already being done by some, but maybe Google and OpenOffice.org will expand the possibilities. Hummmm 🙂
