Introducing MidnightFoxy – Dark & Stylish Theme

Works in Firefox 2 & 3

MidnightFox has always been a great theme. It’s dark, yet usable and, as stated by others, one of the best dark themes out there. However, I wanted more.

While fixing a few toolbar issue with MidnightFox, I started updating other pieces. I reworked the tabs, the bookmarks, some menus and the the navigation buttons. Taking extero’s icons and leveraging Pixelmator’s menu design, I created much nicer toolbar with icons that ‘pop’ when you roll over them.

MidnightFoxy was first set to replace MidnightFox, however some of the testers were partial to the old buttons. So MidnigthFoxy was born. It’s basically the same theme, only with a more polished toolbar.

Give it a try, especially if you like dark Firefox themes.

  1. I think I have stated before that I can’t stand Extero.
It is very dull, very uninspired theme, in my opinion.
Now, I love MIdnightfox, I really do.
But I couldn’t be bothered by a MIdnightfox theme with Extero buttons.
It’s nice that you’re thinking of updating Midnightfox and all, but I think I’ll wait to upgrade until Midnightfox sports iAqua buttons.
(I love iAqua as much, if not more than, MIdnihgtfox. 🙂 )

  2. Thomas says:

iAqua + MidnightFox? I could whip that up for you if you’d like.

  5. niko says:

Can someon tell me how to downgrade this theme?

  6. Darth Griffin says:

I love midnight fox and have been using it for over a year, but I do not like the new square buttons in version .70. How can I go back to version .65?

  7. mage says:

I don’t like this new versione, I prefer a lot the old one…How can I get back the versione before…it was better!!!!

  8. bilo says:

    Download Midnightfox 0.60 here:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/2311

if you download the theme to the harddrive to have a hard-soft copy, you have to open Firefox. open the addons window, and select the themes tab. you have to drag the file into this window – double cicking it or dragging it into the main firefox window will not work…. lame, I know

  9. Dave says:

im using midnight fox theme since i use firefox itself…
its the best lokking for my style.
i dont like the new version, too.
can i get the older version 0.65 somewhere ?
    i love it.
or can i downgrade the new ?
the new version with those square buttons doesn’t
    look good to me.
    the old was much better.
thank you for your work and sry 4 my bad english.
    greets

  10. Thomas says:

Sorry everyone for the mixup. MidnightFoxy is suppose to have the square buttons, MidnightFox is suppose to have the round buttons. I’ve re-uploaded MidnightFox to Mozilla’s site to fix the mixup.

  11. JDPower says:

This theme coul be great but it really needs to lose the squares/borders around the buttons, makes it look amateurish IMO

  12. Wow, it really looks like I opened up a can of worms here, doesn’t it?

  13. Starhawk Laughingsun says:

This theme is terribly unstable for me. After I installed it and reopen firefox I lost most of my session. I had 3 instances of firefox open all with multiple tabs and only one instance actually managed to open and it only had two tabs that could load out of about 7. So many things didn’t work right with it I’m not even going into it. Too bad because it is pretty and would match the dwm desktop I’ve been working on 🙁

  14. Thomas says:

Starhawk – A theme can’t effect your sessions and cause loading issues. If there were issues like that, I’d see them before I ever pushed it out to the public. The issue sounds more like a Firefox one than a theme one.

    I love Midnight Foxy!!

This is my new favorite; I discovered it with the Midnight Fox mix up, so I’m glad it happened!

Okay, so some don’t like the squares; just removing the boarders will fix the square look.

This is very sleek and glossy; love the way the buttons pop when moused over. The tinted search and address bars are classy!

The green arrows, well, I’m not a fan of green with black, maybe azure or shiny silver? I love and humbly suggest those colors with this type of arrows to go with this super sleek theme.

Keep up the great work; this version will open up a whole new audience that prefer the sleek black to the vivid round round buttons.

  16. John Brown says:

PS: Arrows didn’t show up in previous post; the form must have thought it was code so I’ll try again: ( ) . . . greater than less than look.

  17. Thomas says:

I’m glad everyone is liking MidnightFoxy. 🙂 I hope to get it on the live addons’ site soon.

  18. j says:

the theme won’t install from mozilla’s addons site. it gives an installation hash error. can you upload it here or somewhere else to download?

    thx!

  19. Thomas says:

Keep trying on the Mozilla site. They are constantly upgrading and it may download for you now.

  20. Jo says:

Can anyone tell me when Midnight Foxy will be updated to work with Firefox 3?

I love this theme, but have had to swap to another (blurgh) theme until Midnighty Foy is updated.

    Please tell me it’s soon!!!

  21. Thomas says:

    Possibly next week.

  22. josh says:

very good theme, but it messes up a lot of the menu options of both firefox and extensions.

  23. Jo says:

Thank you for updating Midnight Foxy, I love this theme.

  24. NIPfir€ says:

the option menu is small, can’t see last-half of the right side in FF3.2.
    can’t resize it.
    fix it?

  25. Ron says:

MidnightFoxy made my mrnu fonts tiny (File, Edit, View, etc.). Is there a way to tweak that – choose both font and size? Tried Display Properties, Appearance, Advanced options but nothing worked. Thanks.

  26. Thomas says:

I’d check your extensions or customizations to see if any are modifying the theme. During testing of MidnightFoxy on Windows XP, the font size didn’t change.

  27. Sam says:

MidnightFoxy is the first dark theme I’ve ever loved. Haven’t tried MidnightFox .65, although it sounds nice. How about a version for Thunderbird? I would absolutely love a good quality theme like this for Thunderbird.

  28. Thomas says:

My Thunderbird themeing has not gone well and I don’t plan on starting back up a this time.

  29. JJ says:

Hey dude, just wanted you to know that it looks like Midnight Foxy 2.20100120 might have some problems with Firefox 3.5.7 — I was just offered an update to the theme on loading and its looking seriously broken. I’ll find out if its conflicting with any other add-ons I have and verify with my home computer, but here’s a screencap of what it looks like (the galaxy image is my desktop background):

    http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/242/clipboard01dqw.jpg

I can run searches in the google page there, but none of the browser is responsive. Can’t click the empty spaces where buttons should be, can’t click any of the information visible top-left.

I love the theme and figured I’d comment here rather than on the Mozilla themes site 😉

  30. JDPower says:

Midnight fox and Midnight foxy are screwed up with the latest release. Can’t confirm 3.6 compatibility for you atm

  31. Thomas says:
