Labels for Apple’s Mail Application

Labels in Mail have been something I’ve been missing ever since changing over to Apple’s Mail.app. However, I’ve found out how to create a script that allows me to set the color of (or label) a message.

Apple Mail Labels

I’ve tested my scripts in Mac 10.3 Panther and 10.4 Tiger and it works great. I prefer how Apple has scripts set up in 10.3 a little better, however it works.

To install the scripts, first download my labels scripts then use Spotlight (or the find feature in 10.3) to find the Mail Scripts folder. Add the Labels folder that you downloaded into that folder and they’ll be installed. You can also just add them in the main Scripts folder like I did in the screen shot. For me, it provides quicker access in 10.4.

You also have to turn on the scripting menu item. Here is how Apple tells us to do it.

The Script menu gives you easy access to a number of sample scripts provided by Apple to demonstrate the AppleScript capabilities of several Mac OS X applications, including Mail. The Script menu looks like a small scroll, near the right side of the menu bar. To include the Script menu in your menu bar if it’s not already there, open AppleScript Utility and select the “Show Script Menu in menu bar” checkbox.

Once you have done those two things, open the Mail application and you should see a Labels option in the Scripts menu. If you put them in the Mail Scripts folder in 10.4, then you’ll need to make sure to look in there.

The scripts that I provide here are named by color; Red, Green, Blue, etc. If you’d rather have labels that say Urgent, To Do, Later and things like that, just find the script files that you copied to the scripts folder and rename them. Whatever the file name is is what will appear in the Labels folder of the Scripts menu.

To uninstall, make sure to first set your messages back to white, then go back to the scripts folder and remove the scripts.

If you label a message in a thread, then try to un-label it, the thread will stay in color until you close the mailbox window and re-open it. Not a big deal, however kind of annoying.

In the screen shot, I re-named my folder from Labels to Mail Labels and put it in the main Scripts folder of 10.4. I had it in the Mail Scripts folder, however it was to many folders to go though to label a message.

Feel free to ask any questions and let me know what you think of the Label scripts or Apple’s Mail application.

Apple’s Views on Bloggers

Interestingly enough, someone over at Apple has a sence of humor. In the new 10.4 Apple added a dictionary application that is pretty slick. However, if you search for ‘blog’ you get a rather interesting answer. 🙂

blog |bläg| noun a weblog : blogs run by twenty-something Americans with at least an unhealthy interest in computers. verb ( blogged, blogging) [ intrans. ] add new material to or regularly update a weblog. DERIVATIVES blogger noun ORIGIN shortening.

Real Web Browser Security

No web browser is perfect. Hackers will always find new security holes and opportunities for the media to create press and scare you. What really makes the difference in browser security is the time it takes a company to fix the issues. Within a week of finding out about security related issues in , the team went to work to fix the new found issues.

“A proof of concept of the vulnerabilities was reported last weekend (Mother’s Day weekend) and Mozilla immediately took action to prevent active exploits via changes made to the Mozilla Update web service. We also posted a work around so users can further protect themselves by temporarily disabling automatic install from a web site.

“The Mozilla Foundation is deeply committed to providing a safe and secure Internet experience and staying ahead of potential exploits. The Foundation takes security very seriously and is releasing Firefox 1.0.4 to ensure that we continue to provide users the experience they have come to trust.”

iTunes Video Store

With iTunes 4.8 we are one step closer to the iTunes Video Store.

From MacRumors.com

One blog points out that Apple’s iTunes Music store now appears to offer the ability to sell videos as well as songs. This takes advantage of iTunes 4.8 new features allowing it to manage and play video files.

Several readers note that the latest version of iTunes supports video playback — which is a new feature in iTunes. Obviously, users are speculating about long-running thoughts of a video version of the iTunes Music Store and Video capable iPods.

I hope that it expands past just music videos, however it’s a good addition as more and more CDs are coming with bundled DVDs now. I guess that’s incentive to buy the CD and not just download the music. I haven’t bought any music that comes with videos yet, however it could just be a matter of time.

iPods at Microsoft, this makes me smile.

iPods are invading Microsoft headquarters and I think it’s just funny! Especially since the management doesn’t want the employees to have iPods!!

To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft’s management, Apple’s iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft’s workers. ‘About 80 percent of Microsoft employees who have a portable music player have an iPod,’ said one source, a high-level manager who asked to remain anonymous. ‘It’s pretty staggering.’ The source estimated 80 percent of Microsoft employees have a music player–that translates to 16,000 iPod users among the 25,000 who work at or near Microsoft’s corporate campus. ‘This irks the management team no end,’ said the source. So popular is the iPod, executives are increasingly sending out memos frowning on its use.”

New Powerbooks with New Features

Not only did Apple release new Powerbooks today but they also come with a few cool new features.

Ready to Scroll
Scrolling through web pages or large documents on a trackpad can challenge even the most nimble fingers. That’s why every PowerBook G4 features a new trackpad with scrolling capability. Just drag two fingers over the trackpad to scroll vertically and horizontally or pan around any active window. Change this feature to suit your needs: Customize your trackpad settings or turn off scrolling completely via System Preferences.

Takes the Fall
Now every PowerBook G4 is equipped with Apple’s Sudden Motion Sensor to help protect your most valuable asset: your data. The Sudden Motion Sensor senses change in axis position and accelerated movement. In the event of a drop or fall, the Sudden Motion Sensor instantly parks the hard drive heads so they won’t scratch the disks on impact, lessening the risk of damage and improving your chances of retrieving valuable data. When the Sudden Motion Sensor senses your PowerBook is once again level, it unlocks the hard drive heads automatically.

IBM to buy Apple? I think not!

Well the rumors are flying. IBM is looking to get rid of their PC division some claim that they may the buy Apple. I don’t think anyone buys Apple. If anything they’ll partner but I doubt that happen as Apple has high standards and I think Steve Jobs is a control freak. In a good way. 😉

The Register, columnist Cormac O’Reilly
Once publicly free of the PC division IBM will either buy, or form a close joint venture with Apple to sell its PCs, which coincidentally are now built around IBM’s PowerPC chip.

Just think how many positives for IBM such a marriage would provide. IBM would give the same credibility to the Macintosh computer, and its Microsoft-beating operating systems as it provided for the PC in the first place, thereby opening the flood gates of corporate demand.

Hitching up with Apple would provide IBM with a real inroad into the fast growing ‘lifestyle’ market, something the men and women in blue suits kind of missed.

It’s an interesting thought though. If they did partner, Apple could get a huge boost and great publicity for those who are skeptical of what Apple can do. And what if they could cut the prices on the processors? Could that cut the prices of Macs down? In my opinion Macs are a great deal, especially the iLine (iMac, iBook) and even the eMac. For what you get in hardware, software, usability and reliability it’s a hard deal to pass up.

We’ll have to see how this pans out in the next few weeks or months. After all it is just a rumor.

The Electrical Cost of Christmas Lights

It’s that time of year when the Christmas lights go up and houses and trees in the neighborhood look festive! However, each year I hear the same question “how much does it cost to have Christmas lights plugged in?”

Most people probably think back to Clark Griswold and his extremely lit up house in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. His electric bill could be through the roof but that’s because he used more holiday lights than most people. For the average person you’ll only see a few extra dollars while running your Christmas lights.

To prove my point I contacted Xcel Energy who is the main electric company here in Minnesota. I asked if they had information on how much Christmas lights would cost over the holidays. And here is what they said.

“Thank you for taking the time to write to us. Below is a the formula to calculate the cost if you know the wattage of the string of lights.

WATTS times HOURS divided by 1000 = KWH
KWH times RATE = cost.

Example:
100 watt string of lights times hours of monthly use (based on 8 hours a day for a month which would be 240 hours) =24000 watts divided by 1000 =24 kwhs.

24 kwhs X 7.5 cents = $1.80 per month.

So if you know the wattage of the string you can calculate the cost.”

Now I’m not sure what an average 100 string of Christmas lights runs in watts, but I think it’s about 50 watts. That means our example above is 200 lovely mini Christmas lights. A set of 25 C9 colored lights runs about 175 watts I believe. So that sing may run a little more. Watts from this Christmas Store

Now, as you can see, adding some Christmas lights to your house doesn’t cost that much. Especially if the lights are newer since they have newer technology and energy conservation. Now if you go and decorate everything like Clark Griswold your electric bill may go up by 10 or 20 dollars. It all depends on the kind of lights, the number of hours you have them lit and the price of electricity in your area.

Hobbits Are Real!?

I was watching Good Morning America this morning and they say that they found human remains on an Indonesian island that are half the size of humans. Approximately three feet tall and they are referring to them as hobbits.

LONDON (Reuters) – Scientists in Australia have found a new species of hobbit-sized humans who lived about 18,000 years ago on an Indonesian island in a discovery that adds another piece to the complex puzzle of human evolution.

The partial skeleton of Homo floresiensis, found in a cave on the island of Flores, is of an adult female that was a meter (3 feet) tall, had a chimpanzee-sized brain and was substantially different from modern humans.

Hobbits, as made up by the Lord of the Rings movies, are not real, however they may become real. I hope not as I doubt a living thing could never live up to the standards as set by the movies.
