iPhone Facebook Sidebar for Firefox

Works in Firefox 2 & 3

In the past, I’ve talked about how to open Facebook in the sidebar of Firefox. Now, I’ve taken that idea one step farther and created a Firefox extension.

The iPhone Facebook Sidebar extension opens Facebook’s iPhone page and allows you to keep tabs on your friends, update your status, message people and accept friend requests.

Features include:

  • Seeing friend’s updates.
  • Updating our status.
  • Viewing Friends
  • Writing on friends wall.
  • Viewing inbox.
  • Sending messages.
  • Other miscellaneous Facebook fun.
  • Works on Mac and Windows. Possibly Linux too.
  • Works in Firefox 2.x and 3.5.

The iPhone Facebook Sidebar is accessible three different ways in Firefox.

  1. Via an icon in the toolbar. Once the extension is installed, customize your toolbar to add the Facebook icon.
    Facebook Firefox Button
  2. Via the ‘view menu’
    Facebook Firefox Menu
  3. Or by using the keyboard shortcut ‘Control Alt F ‘ on Mac and Windows.

This extension made possible by the great programmers at Facebook who coded the iPhone application to work with any browser. All features and design elements are created by Facebook and this extension is merely a way to make it easily and quickly accessible for Firefox users.

Firefox may pop up a message under your bookmarks bar or tabs bar that says “Firefox prevented this site (www.twistermc.com) from asking you to install software on your computer.” If this happens, click on the “Edit Options…” button and add www.twistermc.com to your allowed sites. Then click the install button again.

*If you can’t get the button above to work, right click this link and save the file to your desktop. Then open the addons window and drag in the xpi file to install.

Let me know what you think by leaving your feedback in the comments below. 😀

Also, thanks to autodafe0728 for the Facebook icon used in this extension. It really looks nice.

I’ve been used this extension for about 4 days. it’s a cool extension that very useful. really like the iphone sliding style.
however, i think there’re some more work need to work on.
1, there’s no “submit” button when i try to write something on anybody’s wall.
2, when i take look at someone’s photo album, there’s no any “go back” link on the photo page. also, i can’t see the caption of the photo.
3, i hope you can update this extension frequently, because this’s very cool plugin. more and more ppl keep coming for it.

Thank you very much for making such wonderful extension. look forward to see next version.

    Hi Zike

There is a post button when you write on someone’s wall. It’s in white text so it may be hard to see.

And yes, photo browsing doesn’t work well.

All features in this extension are controlled by Facebook. I’m just hooking it into Firefox’s sidebar. There is nothing I can do about things that don’t work.

Works splendidly! My only complaint would be that link handling isn’t consistent with the rest of Firefox’s UI. Clicking a link on the iPhone FB opens the link in the sidebar too, which I’d expect, but right-clicking one opens the link in a whole new Firefox window, which is a little annoying. Should be able to right-click a link and Open|Open in new Tab|Open in new Window, or middle-click to open in a new tab, as per Firefox’s personal settings.

Otherwise, it is very cool!!! 🙂 Thanks!
