Plurk Firefox Sidebar [Updated x2]

Works in Firefox 2 & 3
Plurk Firefox Sidebar

I recently discovered Plurk.  A micro-blogging site much like Twitter, only with more features, a cool layout and that headless thing!

I’m a fan of the interactive and innovative timeline of posts.  However some people feel the timeline is a bit busy and go for the simplified mobile version.  So I decided to take a bit of code and put the mobile version in Firefox’s sidebar for easy access.

The Plurk Mobile Sidebar comes complete with Firefox 2 & 3 support, a headless thing button for your toolbar and a keyboard shortcut.  The actual features of the Plurk sidebar application are under Plurks control.

[Updated] Now works up to Firefox 3.9.*.

Download the Plurk Mobile Sidebar extension. (removed)

To install: Download the extension to your desktop. Then go to Tools -> Add-ons and drag plurk1.2.xpi to your add-ons window. It’ll install and you’ll have to restart Firefox.

To use: Go to View -> Sidebar -> Plurk Mobile Sidebar, or hit control+alt+p, or customize your menu bar to add the Plurk button.

Enjoy

  2. Thomas says:

theGypsy – you are everywhere. 🙂

  3. Is it possible to see the number of characters left to type? (I believe there’s 140 limit)

  4. Paul says:

You can do the same thing, by adding http://www.plurk.com/m/ as a bookmark and selecting ‘open in sidebar’

  5. Rich says:

Thanks for the great sidebar! It looks and operates much like the mobile version of Plurk. Very handy.

  6. chris dohman says:

the control+alt+p rocks! nice job thomas!

  7. Herb says:

    Very nice! Thanks.

  8. Mike WIlton says:

Props to you my friend. This is an incredible ap and it takes away the tediousness of Plurk’s interface. This could be the exact tool that keeps me using Plurk and Twitter at the same time. I have to agree with Chris, the Ctrl+alt+P is a huge asset to this addon.

  9. Oscar says:

Useless.. why install one extension if you can bookmark plurk.com/m and configure it to open in a sidebar ??

  10. Thomas says:

    Thanks everyone for the comments!

Oscar, you could just bookmark the mobile version, but then you don’t get a keyboard shortcut or toolbar icon. 🙂

Sridhar – The features are controlled by the Plurk folks.

  11. suni says:

sah-weet… altho i cant seem to find the little headless icon in my FF3

  12. I love it! Thank you!

  13. suni says:

also… the links people post, when clicked also open in the sidebar. so then I have to close and reopen the sidebar to go back to plurk 🙁 … is there a way to fix that?

  14. Thomas says:

suni – Customize your toolbar to add the Plurk button. As far as the links go, not sure how to fix that one.

  15. Matsuri says:

Thanks, and the shortcut would be

    Alt+Ctrl+P

    for windows firefox 🙂

  16. Matsuri says:

A feature i’d like to see.
Every time I click on a link from my plurk friends, the sidebar loads itself and never takes me back unless I’d restart the sidebar.

    TL;DR
Link open to another tab in firefox 🙂

Thanks for this great extension ^_^

  17. Thomas says:

Matsuri – Glad you like the sidebar. Unfortunately, I don’t control the features. I just made the mobile version work in Firefox’s sidebar.

  18. Dette says:

ooh… VERY cool. Just downloaded it – thanx for making it super easy, too!

  19. Thomas says:

  24. Gordus says:

hi all, i’ve just got refered here and downloaded and save to disk, i see that the extension is .xpi but my mac OS 10.4.11 does not seemed to have an application to launch it, any suggestions? thks.

  25. @Gordus:

    1. (Not mandatory) Upgrade to the latest Firefox

    2. Drag the .xpi and drop it into Firefox.

  26. Rayana says:

Very nice extension. works perfectly here. 🙂

I only ask if with this we no longer will access the plurk.com. I would leave by laziness. The good thing about these sites is to enter in the profiles and see the updates, comments, etc. I know that this can be done by the extension, but loses a little grace. Just like the plurk mobile 😛

  27. Hao Chen says:

    Can you Greasemonkey sidebar scripts?

  28. Neagle says:

suni- Try clicking on the Plurk logo to go back to the timeline.

  29. mo says:

I’m very interested, but Firefox (2, and I ain’t upgrading till my extensions do) is refusing to install it. It gives me an error 203 with no real explanation. Is it mocking my refusal to upgrade to 3?

  30. Thomas says:

Mo – Not sure what an error 203 is. The extension works fine with Firefox 3 and should work in Firefox 2.

  31. eyebags says:
